Water Glossary: Description of used water terms

Grondwater	Grondwater	Groundwater	All water that is below the soil surface in the saturated zone and that is in direct contact with the soil or subsoil.
	Watervoerend pakket	Aquifer	A layer of soil that carries water through and is bounded at the top and bottom by an impermeable layer or by a free water surface. Aquifer
	Freatisch pakket	Phreatic layer	Groundwater in which the head (water pressure) depends only on the height of the water column. A phreatic source is the opposite of an artesian source.
	Artesisch pakket	Artesian layer	A water-carrying package in which the head rises above the package because it is under pressure. Sometimes the level is above ground level.
	Niveau	Level	Top water column in meters versus a height reference such as NAP.
	Ontwateringsniveau	Dewatering level	The distance between ground level and the groundwater level.
Methode van meten / Measurement method	Telemetrisch	Telemetric	Measuring by means of a device that measures autonomously and sends the data autonomously.
	Loggend	Logging	Measuring by means of a device that measures autonomously, but where the data must be retrieved on location by reading out the logger.
	Handmatig	Manual	Measure by hand with, for example, a tape measure or acoustic meter.

Meetapparaat / Device	Node	Node	Device to which one or more sensors are connected, which takes measurements, stores them and sends them to the back office.
	Logger	Logger	Device that performs and stores measurements, and is read out frequently (every quarter/semi-annually/yearly) on location.
Sensor	Absolute druk	Absolute pressure	Submersible sensor that measures absolute water pressure. This is the weight of the water column plus the atmospheric pressure on that water column.
	Water temperatuur	Water temperature	Submersible sensor that measures the water temperature. This sensor is generally integrated with the pressure sensor.
	Node temperatuur	Node temperature	The internal temperature of the measurement node. This is used to test the integrity of the node.
	Node luchtvochtigheid	Node relative humidity	The internal humidity of the measuring node. This is used to test the integrity of the node.
	Node luchtdruk	Node air pressure	The internal air pressure of the measuring node. Used to test the integrity of the node. Without modification to the measurement node, this pressure cannot be used for barometric compensation (see WLS).
Meetpunt / Measurement point	Buis	Tube	A vertical tube in the ground or surface water in which the water level can be determined.
	Filter	Filter	The lower 1+ meters of the pipe where the groundwater can flow into the pipe. Filter and tube are often used interchangeably: e.g. the well has 3 tubes or 3 filters.
	Put	Well	One or more tubes characterized by a single location and finish (surface box or chute).
	Groep	Group	A collection of objects and measuring points such as the tubes and wells.
	Meetdata	Measurement data	The time series of the groundwater level in meters relative to a reference point, usually NAP.
	Metadata	Meta data	Al de gegevens van Put en Buis(zen). Een put en een buis hebben een eigen metadata pagina. 	Artesische buis	Artesian tube	A tube from which the water under pressure of an artesian pack runs out of the tube. These tubes are closed with an artesian cap. For level measurements, an extension piece is placed on the tube to reach the correct height.
WLS	Waterlevel service	Waterlevel service	The back office service that converts the water pressure measured by the node into water levels in meters relative to a reference point, usually NAP (m NAP). The WLS combines water pressure with air pressure and tube installation data. 	Barometrische compensatie	Barometric compensation	Since the measured pressure value is absolute, the air pressure at the time of the water pressure measurement must be subtracted from the pressure measurement (also known as air pressure compensation). For this, the reported air pressure from the nearest KNMI station is used or the AccuWeather service for the location of the Measuring Point.
	Barometrische hoogte compensatie	Barometric measurement height compensation	Because the KNMI and AccuWeather always give the pressure at sea level, there is an option in the WLS to compensate the barometric pressure for the height of the measuring point (every 10 m above sea level accounts for a deviation of 1 cm in the water level). 	Zoutgehalte compensatie	Salinity compensation	The standard assumption is fresh water and therefore a weight of 1 kg/litre. If the water is salty, an optional salinity correction is possible in the WLS. This can be done by entering the density value of the tube in the metadata tab.
BRO	Wet	Law	Basis Registratie Onderhoud (or Subsoil) originates from a law in the Netherlands, which obliges (among other things) governments to provide the data of their groundwater measuring points, tubes, and groups and the water levels to the BRO service. Wet Bro
	Bronhouder	Groundwater source owner	The government - municipality, provinces, water board or Rijkswaterstaat, but also drinking water companies - that operates wells that fall under the BRO Bronhouder
	Datamodel	Data model	The data model for water and water measuring points. For groundwater this is partly based on the BRO Catalogus GMW
	GMW		Groundwater Monitoring Well (GMW). This includes all metadata of wells and tubes. See also Catalogus GMW
	GMN		Groundwater Monitoring Net (GMN). Also called a measurement network. Equivalent to a group / project in our portal. It is a collection of all wells in the BRO. See also Catalogus GMN
	GLD		Groundwater Level Dossier (GLD). In a GLD the groundwater levels of a tube are stored within the BRO. See also Grondwaterstandonderzoek (GLD)
Meteo	Neerslag	Precipitation	The whole of possible precipitation from the air; rain, snow, hail, etc. This is the gross precipitation (see below Evapotranspiration).
	Regenval	Rainfall	This only means rain, so not any other forms of precipitation.
	Evapotranspiratie	Evapotranspiration	Moisture that evaporates into the air from the soil/vegetation and groundwater bodies, reducing net precipitation..
